Cold air sliding down out of the range hood on a winter evening, with the fan off, often means outside air is getting past the duct. Whether that is a hood repair turns on one check you can make with the power off: is there a damper flap above the filters, and does it close? The answer decides whether the fix is at the hood or out along the duct.

Look up first: flap, bare duct or filter

With the hood switched off at its plug or breaker, take the grease filters out and look up: a ducted hood shows an opening into a duct, and a ductless one does not. The difference between the two types is covered at Range Hood Repair.

For a ducted hood, the Post Falls Building Division's sheet of adopted codes, revised Feb. 16, 2025, lists the 2018 International Residential Code, which requires a backdraft damper on the duct for new installations. What you see above the filters sorts the draft into one of four cases.

A flap that hangs shut: If it closes and the draft continues, the cause lies further up the duct, which is sheet-metal or HVAC work. Note when the draft started, whether it is stronger on windy days, and, from the ground, whether the flap on the outside cap stands open with the hood off; both details help a diagnosis.

A flap that is there but stuck open: Look without forcing it. One glued with grease, bent at the hinge or still taped from installation is often visible from below. Dampers that will not open or will not close are covered as part of a hood repair.

An opening with no flap in sight: The damper can sit further along the duct, out of view, so a bare opening is not proof on its own. If a diagnosis finds no damper at all, adding one is installation work, outside a hood repair, and a mechanical contractor or the Post Falls Building Division is the place to ask about it.

No duct at all: A ductless hood has no path for outdoor air, so a cold draft points elsewhere, and for a weak fan the filters come first. Broan-NuTone's range hood FAQ describes a non-duct hood as one that “re-circulates the air in through the filters and out through vents near the front or top of the hood.” It says aluminum mesh grease filters “should be washed in your dishwasher approximately every month,” that non-ducted carbon filters “must be replaced,” and that every three to six months “is recommended for replacing the charcoal filters.” Some charcoal filters carry an indicator strip that, in the FAQ's words, changes “from dotted lines to wide solid lines as a signal to replace the filter.” Your own manual sets the interval for your model.

2018 IRC M1503.3, adopted in Post Falls: a new hood's duct to the outdoors is to have a backdraft damper.

Drafts, caps and conversions

Looking up past the filters is the surest test. From the ground, with no need to climb, you can also look for a cap on an outside wall or the roof near the kitchen; a ducted hood ends at one, and its flap or louver may lift when the hood runs. If no cap turns up on a ducted hood, note that too. M1503.3 says such ducts “shall not terminate in an attic or crawl space or areas inside the building,” and where a duct actually ends is a question for a mechanical contractor, not a hood repair.

Not unless the model is made for it. The same FAQ calls a hood “designed to be ducted and can also be installed as non-duct with the purchase of a parts kit and charcoal filters” non-duct capable. The owner's manual or the maker's parts list shows whether a kit exists for your model, and converting a hood is installation work, outside a repair visit.

At the hood, in three steps

1. Reading the setup

A diagnosis starts by confirming whether the hood is ducted or ductless, since some look the same from the front. The diagnostic time on the service call is there to separate a failed motor or switch from filters, a loaded blower wheel, or a stuck damper, and, on a ducted hood, to determine whether the flap opens with the fan and drops shut when it stops.

2. Fan, switch and light

If the fan is dead, stuck on one speed, or louder than it was, the electrical side is tested at the hood: the motor, the speed switch, and the light circuit, whose common symptoms Range Hood Repair describes.

3. The run beyond the hood

Anything further up the duct, and the penetration through the wall or roof, is a sheet-metal or HVAC job. The diagnosis says whether the hood itself is sound, so whoever takes on the duct starts from what was already ruled out.

Work a hood repair does not reach

01

Repairs only, in your home. Appliances are not installed, a new unit is not fitted into cabinetry, and nothing is reconnected after a kitchen change. The one exception anywhere on the site is a like-for-like garbage disposal swap.

02

Residential only. In Sergei's words, no commercial at all. Homes and rental properties are the business, and commercial kitchens, restaurants, and commercial refrigeration are not taken on.

03

There is no shop and no drop-off, so nothing gets carried anywhere. There is also no factory authorization here, which means manufacturer warranty repairs are not done. If your appliance is still inside its manufacturer warranty, you will be told to use that coverage rather than being sold a repair you could have had free.
