If your dryer runs a full cycle and the clothes come out damp, starts squealing every time the drum turns, or will not start at all, you are on the right page. Dryer calls come in steadily all year here, and most dryer faults come down to a single inexpensive part.

SD Appliance is Sergei Dergunov, repairing appliances since 2013 and running the company from the South Hill in Spokane since 2020. Electric and gas, stacked and freestanding, and the closet installations that require the unit to be lifted down before anything can be reached.

One thing worth knowing before you call: a dryer that is not drying is very often not the dryer. Nearly every dryer in this area is electric, and on an electric dryer, a blocked vent will stop it drying properly every time.

What people are actually saying when they call

These are the situations people describe when they call. The section after this explains what is behind each one.

The call comes to Sergei
and he knows which part to bring

“My dryer runs, but nothing dries.”

The dryer call that comes in more than any other. It splits two ways: either the dryer has stopped producing heat, or it is producing heat and the moist air has nowhere to go. Those are different repairs, and one of them is not a repair at all.

“It is taking three cycles to dry a load.”

Airflow rather than heat, nearly every time, and it has usually been getting worse for months.

“There is a squeal every time it turns.”

A noise from the drum, and it is worth correcting a common assumption right away. People say belt, and it is almost never the belt.

“It will not start at all.”

Thermal fuses, door switches, and timers. Often one of the cheaper repairs on the appliance, and worth checking before anyone concludes the dryer is finished.

“It smells like something is burning.”

This one gets treated as urgent. Lint accumulates where heat is, and a burning smell from a dryer is the symptom you do not wait on.

“It stops part way through the cycle.”

Different from a dryer that will not start. A machine that quits partway through is usually protecting itself, which points to a thermal cutoff or a control fault rather than the heating element everyone assumes.

“It is stacked in a closet, and I do not know if you can even get to it.”

Yes, though it sometimes needs a second person to bring the dryer down off the washer. Worth mentioning on the phone so the visit is planned for it.

What actually fails

Three parts account for the bulk of dryer repairs in this area, and they come up in a consistent order.

A CONSISTENT ORDER
The squeal is rarely the belt; the diagnosis comes first
01

Heating element: the number one call

On an electric dryer, the part that fails most. The dryer runs, the drum turns, the timer counts down, and nothing gets warm. It is a well-understood repair, and the part is on the van.

02

Rollers: the squeal people blame on the belt

The drum rides on rollers, and when they wear, the dryer announces it. Almost everyone who calls about a squeal thinks it is the belt. It is far more often the rollers the drum sits on, or the tension pulley. It is a good example of why the diagnosis happens before the part order.

03

Timers and controls: the will-not-start group

Timers, thermal fuses and door switches. Cheaper than the other two, and worth ruling in or out before anybody talks about a new dryer.

04

Gas dryers: igniters and coils

A small share of the dryers in this area are gas, and they fail differently. Igniters and gas valve coils rather than heating elements. Both are handled here, and a gas smell is a call to the utility first, then to a repair company.

Why Spokane dryers fail the way they do

Nearly every dryer around Spokane is electric, and that shapes what goes wrong here. A dryer that will not dry is far more often an airflow problem than a heating problem, whether it is fueled by gas or electricity, and the vent is the first thing to check. That one fact decides whether you need a part or a cleaning. On the practical side: stacked units in closets are common, and bringing a dryer down off a washer sometimes needs a second person, so it is worth saying on the phone. And on parts, local counter stock for appliance parts is thin. Heating elements and rollers are common enough to ride on the van; anything less common comes from out of town, and you are told what that means for timing before anything is ordered.

What this covers

The dryer work we take on
Not heating, not drying, taking multiple cycles, not starting, not tumbling
Heating element replacement on electric dryers
Igniter and gas valve coil replacement on gas dryers
Drum rollers, tension pulleys, belts and bearings
Thermal fuses, thermostats, door switches, timers and moisture sensors
Control board diagnosis and replacement
Noise and vibration diagnosis
Vent and lint safety check as part of a dryer repair, where the setup allows it
Dryer maintenance: the unit apart, lint cleared from inside, rollers and components checked
Electric and gas, freestanding and stacked, including closet installations

What we do not do

Standalone dryer vent cleaning

The vent is inspected and cleared as part of a dryer repair where the setup allows, but it is not a service you can book on its own.

Installation

Repairs only. New units are not fitted, stacked, or connected to a vent line.

Drop-off or in-shop repair

There is no shop and no bench repair. The dryer is worked on where it stands, closet installations included.

Repair or replace?

Dryers are among the better appliances to repair, because the parts that fail are inexpensive and the machines themselves are mechanically simple. A heating element or a set of rollers on a dryer that is otherwise sound is straightforward value.

Where it turns is at the age of a control board or a motor, particularly on a machine that has already had one significant repair.

The rough test people are looking for is the one they find online: if the repair costs more than about half of a replacement, buy the replacement. It is a reasonable starting point, with one adjustment for dryers specifically. Dryers are simple machines that last a long time, so a heating element or a set of rollers on a ten-year-old dryer is usually still worth doing, where the same money into a ten-year-old front-load washer often is not.

And sometimes the answer that surprises people is that there is nothing wrong with the dryer at all: the problem is the vent. There is a section on that further down, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

The longer version, appliance by appliance

What it costs

Service call
$89

It covers travel, inspection, and the diagnostic time needed to settle whether the fault is the dryer or the vent, which decides whether you need a part at all. It applies to the repair if you go ahead, and stands on its own if you decide not to.

Beyond that, dryer repair is one of the more predictably priced services in the trade because the common failures involve known parts rather than open-ended diagnosis. What moves the number is which part has failed, whether the machine is electric or gas, and whether it is stacked in a closet that needs the unit brought down before anything can be reached.

You get the price before the work starts, not after.

What a repair typically costs

How the visit goes

1

You talk to Sergei

Tell him the brand, the model number if you can find it, and what the dryer is doing rather than what you think is wrong. Runs but no heat, will not start and squealing are three different repairs.

2

He arrives with the likely parts

Heating elements and rollers are common enough to ride on the van. That is why a large share of dryer calls are finished in one visit.

3

Diagnosis, then a price

Including whether the fault is the dryer or the vent, which is a distinction worth making before any part gets ordered.

4

The repair, and the vent check that goes with it

Where the setup allows, the vent is inspected as part of the job because a new heating element in a blocked vent will fail again. Nothing gets ordered without your approval on the part and the price. Parts and labor are warranted for 30 to 90 days as stated on your invoice.

The vent
the thing nobody
checks

The vent is the thing nobody checks, and it is the thing that starts fires

On an electric dryer, if the vent is blocked, it will not dry properly. That is not a tendency; it is how the machine works. The dryer heats air, the air picks up moisture from the clothes, and that air has to leave the building. Restrict the exit, and the same wet air circulates, so the clothes stay damp no matter how well the heating element works.

Which means a dryer replaced for not drying is sometimes a dryer that was never broken. The new one then does exactly the same thing in the same vent.

The safety side

The safety side is the more serious half. Lint is fine, dry, and combustible, and it collects at exactly the point where the machine makes heat. The symptom never to wait on is a burning smell during a cycle: stop using the dryer rather than run one more load.

Two things worth knowing about how this gets handled here. Vent cleaning is done as part of a dryer repair when the setup allows it, and it is not a service you book on its own. And a dryer maintenance visit is the one maintenance service on this whole site recommended without hesitation, because what it prevents is a fire rather than an inconvenience.

One more reason to look at the vent rather than the machine. A call came in for a dryer making a strange noise. The dryer came apart, everything checked out, and nothing obvious was causing it. The noise turned out to be acorns, packed into the vent line by a squirrel that had decided a dryer duct made an excellent winter pantry. The dryer was never broken. It is a funny story, and it is also the point of this section: the thing making the noise is not always the appliance.

She sent the model number ahead. He arrived with the parts.

“We needed our dryer repaired as quickly as possible! […] The tech showed up right when he said he would, was courteous and professional. I had already given him the Serial and Model # and info about the issue with the dryer, and he quickly found the issue. To my great surprise he even had all the parts on the truck!”

Common questions

Either, and on an electric dryer it is very often the vent. No heat at all points on the element; slow-drying points at airflow. Both get checked on the visit.

Yes. They fail differently, mostly igniters and gas valve coils rather than heating elements. If you can smell gas, call the gas company first.

No, but mention it when you call. Sometimes, bringing a stacked dryer down needs a second person.

The dryer is taken apart, lint is cleared from inside the cabinet rather than just the trap, and the rollers are checked while it is open.

Often not. Beyond the vent, there is a second cause worth knowing: on machines with moisture sensors, fabric softener residue can coat the sensor and lead the dryer to believe the clothes are still wet. Wiping it costs nothing and is worth trying before anyone is called.

All the major ones, including LG, Whirlpool, Samsung, Maytag, GE, Frigidaire, and Speed Queen. No manufacturer authorization and no manufacturer script to follow.

Heating elements and rollers ride on the van. Anything less common comes from out of town, and you are told what that means for timing before it is ordered.
