If the fan above your stove has stopped, runs at only one speed, rattles hard enough to be heard over the cooking, or the light works but the fan does not, you are on the right page.
SD Appliance is Sergei Dergunov, working out of the South Hill since 2020 and repairing appliances since 2013. Under-cabinet hoods, wall-mounted chimney hoods, island hoods, and the microwave-hood combinations over a range.
Call (509) 866-6767 and you will talk to Sergei, the person who does the repair, not a call center.
What people describe when they call about a hood
A short list, because hoods fail in a narrow set of ways.
“The fan does not come on at all.”
Either the switch or the motor, and which one it is takes a meter rather than a guess. If the light still works and power is reaching the unit, that narrows it considerably.
“It runs on one speed and not the others.”
A switch fault far more often than a motor fault, because the speed positions wear at different rates while the motor itself is fine.
“It has gotten loud.”
Bearings in the fan motor, or a blower wheel loaded with grease. One is a repair, and the other is a clean, and they sound different.
“The light works, but the fan does not.”
That points at the switch or the motor rather than the power supply, and it is worth saying on the phone because it changes what comes out on the van.
“It runs, but it does not pull anything.”
Usually the filters or the ductwork rather than the fan. Grease-loaded baffles kill airflow long before a motor fails.
“The whole thing is dead.”
Check the breaker first, and on a microwave-hood combination, check that the microwave itself still powers up. If it does not, it is the microwave, and that is on the microwave repair page.
What actually fails
Hoods are simple machines, and the failures are correspondingly few. His own answer on this was short: the fan motor is the number-one problem, then the switches.
The fan motor: the number one call
Motors run in a hot, greasy airstream and they wear from it. On most hoods, the motor is a replaceable part rather than a sealed assembly, which makes the repair sensible on a unit worth keeping.
Switches and speed controls: second on the list
Rocker switches, rotary controls, and the touch panels on newer chimney hoods. A hood that has lost one speed but kept the others is almost always this.
The light circuit
Sockets, the lamps themselves, and on newer units an LED board. Frequently the cheapest repair on the page.
The blower wheel
Not a failure so much as a condition. A wheel packed with cooking grease is out of balance, noisy, and moving far less air than it should.
The damper
The flap that is supposed to open when the fan runs and close when it stops. A stuck damper is why a hood pushes nothing outside, or why the kitchen is cold under the vent in January.
What makes a Spokane hood call different
Two things come up here more than they should. The first is that a good share of Spokane kitchens have a microwave-hood combination rather than a dedicated hood, which means the fan and the microwave share one appliance and one failure can look like the other. That is worth establishing on the phone, because it decides which parts ride out on the van. The second is ducting: older houses on the South Hill and in the Valley were often built with a hood that recirculates through a charcoal filter rather than venting outside, and a recirculating hood whose charcoal filter has never been changed chokes airflow and stops removing odor altogether while the fan runs perfectly.
What this covers
What we do not do
Installation
Repairs only. A new hood is not fitted, no new ductwork is cut, and no new circuits are run.
Ductwork and roof or wall penetrations
The damper is covered, but anything further up the duct, or the penetration through the wall or roof, is a sheet-metal or HVAC job.
Commercial kitchen hoods
Commercial kitchen hoods and grease-extraction systems. Residential only, in your home.
Cleaning as a booked service
Filters and the blower wheel are cleaned as part of a repair where they are the cause of the fault, but cleaning is not a service you can book on its own.

Repair or replace?
Hoods are among the better repair cases on the site, for the same reason the built-ins are: a wall-mounted or island hood is fitted to the cabinetry and ducted through the wall or roof, so replacing it is not a matter of unplugging one and sliding another in.
For a ducted built-in hood, the fitting often costs more than the failed part. That is the arithmetic that makes the repair obvious.
An inexpensive under-cabinet hood is the other end of it. Where the motor has gone on a low-cost unit, a replacement often costs about as much as the repair, and you will hear that rather than being sold the repair.
What it costs
It covers travel, inspection, and the diagnostic time needed to separate a failed motor or switch from filters, a loaded blower wheel or a stuck damper. It goes toward the repair if you go ahead, and it stands on its own if you decide not to.
Hoods are among the cheaper appliance repairs on the site, because the parts are few and none of them is expensive. A light socket, a speed switch, and a fan motor are three different price points, and all three sit below what a board costs on a modern range.
Where the cost goes up is access rather than parts. A chimney hood mounted on the wall above an island takes longer to open than an under-cabinet unit, and the labor reflects that.
How the visit goes
You talk to Sergei
No call center and no dispatcher. Tell him the brand, the model number if you can find it, and whether the light still works, because that one detail narrows it before he leaves.
Diagnosis, then a price
The fault is confirmed on site, not guessed at, and the price follows the confirmed fault rather than the symptom.
The repair, and what happens if a part has to come in
Common parts ride on the van. Anything less common is ordered in, and nothing gets ordered without your approval of the part and the price.
Warranty
Parts and labor are warranted for 30 to 90 days as stated on your invoice.
is broken
Why a hood that runs perfectly can still move no air
This is the call worth understanding before you make it, because on a fair share of them nothing is broken.
A hood does one of two things to the air it pulls in. A ducted hood pushes it outside through the wall or the roof. A recirculating hood pushes it through a charcoal filter and back into the kitchen. Older houses on the South Hill and in the Valley were frequently built with the second kind, and a recirculating hood is inherently less effective than a ducted one before any filter is considered.
The same is true of grease. Baffle and mesh filters loaded with cooking residue choke a hood long before anything electrical fails, and a blower wheel packed with grease is both noisy and useless.
None of that is a repair, and none of it gets billed as one. It is worth two minutes on the phone before anybody drives out.

Common questions
Yes, often. In his words: when they cook, they need that fan on, and if it is not working, they will call just for that appliance.
It is useful information. It tells you that power is reaching the unit, which points to the switch or the motor rather than the supply.
If the microwave itself still runs and only the fan has stopped, this page. If the microwave is dead too, it is the microwave, and that is on the microwave repair page. Say which one on the phone, and the right parts come out.
Usually, and often it is not even a repair. A blower wheel loaded with grease is noisy and moves no air, and cleaning it fixes both. Motor bearings sound different, and that one is an actual repair.
Sometimes not. Where the motor has gone on a low-cost hood, a replacement often costs about as much as the repair, and you will hear that rather than being sold the repair.
No. Repairs only. Fitting a new hood means cabinetry, ductwork, and often electrical, and that is a different trade.
No. Seven days a week at the same rate. A Saturday, a Sunday, or a holiday is billed like a weekday.
