The dishwasher manual wants a hardness number, and in Post Falls which number applies depends on who supplies the address. The city's 2023 water quality report lists none, while East Greenacres Irrigation District's 2025 report carries one, so cloudy glasses here start with a supplier lookup. Finding out which supplier serves the house usually takes one street address.

Where a Post Falls hardness number comes from

East Greenacres Irrigation District prints a hardness reading in its water quality report: a 9.58-grain total under the voluntary monitoring results in its 2025 report, beside a scale on which 7.0 to 10.5 grains is the band it calls hard. That scale also serves as a guide for a strip that reads in grains: 3.5 to 7.0 is moderately hard, 7.0 to 10.5 is hard, and above 10.5 is very hard. The same report describes the district's system as untreated. Reports are issued year by year, so check the district's current report before relying on the figure.

The City of Post Falls Water Division's 2023 water quality report, the one its Water page linked to as of Oct. 15, 2026, puts its customer count at around 20,000 and lists no hardness, calcium, or magnesium readings. The report adds that two other water districts in Post Falls supply some customers, and it says an updated report is sent to customers each year, so look for a newer one before testing. East Greenacres is based in Post Falls, and a home on any other supplier can ask that supplier how hard its water runs or test it with a strip.

Settle the supplier first. For most owners, the name on the water bill answers it. A tenant can ask the landlord or property manager which supplier bills the address. A buyer still in escrow, or anyone else without a bill in hand, has a second route: use the Water Service Provider lookup tool run by the Spokane Aquifer Joint Board and linked from the city's Water page. Type in the street address and the tool names the water provider for that spot.

Then get a number. On the irrigation district's water, the district's reading is the starting point. For any other supply, there are two routes: “Ask your local water utility company for the water hardness value of your tap water or use a test strip.” Its softener models come with a strip in the box, and hardware stores sell others that may read on a different scale.

With a reading in hand, match the machine to it and go no higher. Setting the hardness above what the water needs has a cost of its own: Bosch's troubleshooting lists water that is too soft among the causes of irreversible clouding on glassware, and its remedy is to set the softener according to the water hardness or one setting lower. Between two settings, the lower one is the side that the remedy leans toward.

Bring the supplier's figure, your test result, and the machine's current setting. A diagnosis checks one against the other; if they already match and the film persists, the cause is more likely in the wash and fill parts covered at Dishwasher Repair. If the film started soon after a new dishwasher went in, mention that, since a setting left as it came from the factory may not match the water at your address.

The lookup, strips and detergent

It can, and the tool says so itself: its disclaimer says the results show which provider is designated to serve an area and asks residents to contact that provider to verify that the property sits inside its service area. The same call is a chance to ask how hard that provider's water runs.

It can, for the detergent. GE's guidance is that soft water needs less detergent and very hard water needs a full main cup plus the open cup, and for everything between it says, “Conditions between these require judgment. Use enough to get the job done, but don't use more than you need.” GE gives no numbers for those categories, so adjust the amount by what the dishes show.

Only if the water did. Whoever set it chose a level for the old supplier's water, and a move across town can change the supplier as surely as a move across the state line. Look up the new address, get that supplier's number or a strip reading, and reset the machine. The lookup tool covers Kootenai and Spokane counties, so it can also confirm which supplier the old address was associated with.

None of the suppliers' figures. A private well has no utility to ask, so the strip is the route left, and the lookup tool's own disclaimer warns that small, unmapped systems are likely, which is one more reason to test at your own tap rather than borrow a neighbor's number.

By its own instructions first. One maker's steps for the strip packed with its dishwashers are to run the kitchen tap for five minutes, dip the colored end for one second and shake it off, then compare it with the chart after one minute. A strip bought separately may use another scale, so read it against its own chart.
