A washer that started filling at a trickle soon after the city changed your water meter is worth checking the back of the machine first. A slow fill usually traces to the inlet valve or the mesh screens in front of it, and from the front of the washer, a clogged screen and a failed valve can look much the same.

Sergei Dergunov answers the phone. Sergei answers the phone himself in English, Russian, and Ukrainian, so describe the problem in whichever language comes easier.

Four things to look for before you call

These help separate a supply problem from a fault inside the machine.

A blue door hanger from the city's Water Department, or a city crew working your street

Note roughly when, and whether the slow fill began after it.

A thin stream into the tub

Water trickles in and the machine sits waiting for the level it wants.

Hot fills and cold stalls, or the reverse

On a machine with two hoses, each usually has its own screen. If a hot-only setting fills normally and a cold-only setting trickles, or vice versa, one side is getting less water than the other.

A water-supply error on the display

Many machines display a code when the tub has not filled within the allotted time. Write it down exactly as shown.

What the city's meter change-out does to your pipes

The Coeur d'Alene Water Department's meter change-out page says crews shut off the water for a short time, install the new meter, a job the page puts at about 30 minutes on average, and “perform a short flush to purge air from the plumbing system,” and that a blue door hanger is left when they cannot reach anyone at home.

A shutoff and restart can leave air in the lines, which is what the city's flush is meant to purge, and it can loosen particles that had settled in the pipe. The washer's inlet hoses feed its valve through small mesh screens. When enough debris collects there, the valve receives less water than the control expects, and the machine can fill slowly or stop with a fill error.

Weak faucets around the same time are a further clue. The small screens in their tips can catch the same debris, and a slow kitchen tap points at the supply.

City of Coeur d'Alene meter change-out page: crews shut off the water, install a new meter and ‘perform a short flush to purge air from the plumbing system’. The page says a blue door hanger is left when no one is home. If the washer has filled slowly since, mention the hanger when you call.

How the visit runs

1. The water supply side

The taps behind the washer, the hoses and the inlet screens come into the diagnosis on a slow fill, since that is where meter-work debris would stop.

2. Then the parts inside the machine

With clean water reaching the valve and the fill still slow, the suspects are the valve itself, the water-level sensor, or the control that opens the valve, confirmed on the machine. Anything other than a slow fill starts at Washer Repair.

After the meter crew leaves

It can help. The city's page says its flush is meant to purge air from the plumbing, and running a cold tap at a laundry or utility sink until the water runs clear gives loosened particles another way out before the washer draws.

It could be either. Air left in the lines can make pipes sputter or knock after the water comes back, and a valve snapping shut or a loose pipe behind the wall can sound much the same from the laundry room. When the knocking started helps sort the two.

Watch the first few loads. Note how long the tub takes to fill and whether the display shows a fill code, and glance at the faucets for a weak stream. If the fill stays normal, there is no reason to call. If it slows down later, the meter change date helps pinpoint the start of the problem.

It can be. Dishwasher and refrigerator water lines often pass through small inlet screens, so the same debris can reach them. If more than one appliance slows down at the same time, that points back to the supply. More on dishwashers is at Dishwasher Repair.

The bill for a slow fill

The service call is $89. It covers travel, inspection, and diagnostic time. It goes toward the repair if you go ahead, and it stands on its own if you decide not to.

For a washer that fills slowly, the quote identifies the work, whether that is clearing the inlet screens, replacing the valve, or replacing the water-level sensor.

Limits on every washer call

01

Repairs only, in your home. Appliances are not installed, a new unit is not fitted into cabinetry, and nothing is reconnected after a kitchen change. The one exception anywhere on the site is a like-for-like garbage disposal swap.

02

Residential only. In Sergei's words, no commercial at all. Homes and rental properties are the business, and commercial kitchens, restaurants, and commercial refrigeration are not taken on.

03

There is no shop and no drop-off, so nothing gets carried anywhere. There is also no factory authorization here, which means manufacturer warranty repairs are not performed. If your appliance is still inside its manufacturer warranty, you will be told to use that coverage rather than being sold a repair you could have had free.
