Range, Stove and Cooktop Repair in Coeur d'Alene, ID

Owner-Operated | Same Rate as Spokane, No Distance Surcharge | Open 7 Days | Bonded and Insured

Coeur d'Alene's mechanical permit fee schedule lists “Gas Range - Residential” among its line items, so if a new gas range is being weighed against a repair, ask the city's building division what applies. For the repair itself, a burner that clicks and will not catch, a glass top that stays dark and a zone that ignores the pan all start from one question: does the range burn gas? Read its rating label before anything else.

If the range is gas and you smell gas, Avista's instruction is to “Move everyone upwind” and, “From a safe distance, call 911 and then Avista.”

Gas or electric: read the range, not the house

In the Census Bureau's ACS five-year figures for 2020 to 2024, about 55% of occupied housing units in Coeur d'Alene heat with utility gas and about 41% with electricity. With both fuels this common, a house heated by electric baseboard can still have a gas range, so the kitchen has to be checked on its own. The rating label on the range lists the fuel it was built for, and the burner grates on the cooktop indicate gas. A gas meter outside shows only that gas reaches the building; in an apartment or condo, the meters may be grouped elsewhere, and every other appliance in the unit may be electric, so the label is the surer check.

If gas is in the air

Natural gas has no odor of its own. Avista adds mercaptan, which it describes as a sulfur-like, rotten-egg smell, so that a leak can be noticed, and a hissing or roaring sound is another sign. Besides calling 911 and then Avista from a safe distance, its steps are to evacuate, avoid anything that could make a spark, with flashlights and lighters as examples, and keep away until emergency personnel indicate it is safe to return. A household gas detector can give early warning; Avista suggests a UL-listed model, tested monthly with the batteries replaced as needed, but it is no substitute for calling 911 and the utility.

When part of the gas line itself needs replacing, that is not part of a range repair; no new gas line is run. Avista puts the piping between the meter and the appliances on the homeowner, and repairs to that piping are handled by a plumber or heating dealer.

Range coil elements laid on a counter during range repair in Coeur d'Alene

A gas burner that will not light

With no hint of gas in the room, a burner that clicks without catching, or stays dark and silent when turned on, is everyday repair work on the igniter, the module that sends it the spark or the burner valve. If a new gas range is being considered instead, the city's building division is the first call.

Electric and induction

On an electric range, the question becomes which kind of top it is: exposed coils, smooth glass over radiant elements, or induction. The three fail in different ways, and a radiant glass top and an induction top can look alike, so if the glass does not tell you which you have, the owner's manual will.

Quick looks at the cooktop

Each of these assumes there is no gas odor in the room, and none of them involves taking anything apart. The guidance comes from GE Appliances' support pages.

Clicking with no flame after a spill or a wipe-down: Disconnect power to the range, at the plug or the breaker, before cleaning it. Moisture in a burner's ports after cleaning can keep it clicking without lighting until the burner dries out. Let the range dry for a few hours, then try lighting the burner again; it can take up to 10 or 12 clicks to catch. A dry burner that still will not catch belongs on the repair list.

Every igniter clicks when one knob turns: It is normal to hear several burners click when only one ignites. If igniters click with the burners off, make sure each knob is turned completely to OFF and has popped back out; clicking that carries on after that needs service.

A radiant element that glows, fades, and glows again: Radiant elements normally cycle on and off, glowing red and then going dark, at every setting: on about 25% of the time on LOW, about 50% on MEDIUM, and about 75% on HIGH. An element that never glows at all is the one to report.

An induction zone that ignores the pan. Hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan: if it sticks, the cookware will work on induction. If it falls away, try another pan. Some induction tops flash a code when the pan has been lifted off or is not centered, so center it before deciding anything is wrong. A zone that will not start under a centered pan, the magnet grips points to a fault.

Range, Stove and Cooktop Repair covers the part behind each of these faults on gas, electric, and induction tops, and a hood fan that has stopped is covered at Range Hood Repair.

Limits that apply to every job

01

Repairs only, in your home. Appliances are not installed, a new unit is not fitted into cabinetry, and nothing is reconnected after a kitchen change. The one exception anywhere on the site is a like-for-like garbage disposal swap.

02

Residential only. In Sergei's words, no commercial at all. Homes and rental properties are the business, and commercial kitchens, restaurants, and commercial refrigeration are not taken on.

03

There is no shop and no drop-off, so nothing gets carried anywhere. There is also no factory authorization here, which means manufacturer warranty repairs are not done. If your appliance is still inside its manufacturer warranty, you will be told to use that coverage rather than being sold a repair you could have had free.
