The gas was off for a move or for meter work, and now the oven will not light. Avista's natural gas safety page states that, for its Idaho and Washington customers, it does not perform relights for a pilot that is turned off for the season or due to a move. That rule is about pilot lights, and many newer ovens have none: in Avista's words, “Most new natural gas appliances, except for water heaters, come equipped with electronic ignition and automatic shutoff valves.”

If you smell gas, Avista's instruction is to “Move everyone upwind” and, “From a safe distance, call 911 and then Avista.” A pilot light that will not light but still emits gas is on the list of leak signs. Never use the oven to heat a room; the utility lists the stove as a common source of carbon monoxide.

With no smell, the ignition type determines the next step. If the oven has a standing pilot and gas was shut off at the meter for the move, an unlit pilot is the first thing to rule out. For that relight, Avista's rule for its Idaho and Washington customers is to call a contractor. An oven with electronic ignition has no pilot to relight; if it still will not light even after the gas is back on at the meter, it may need a repair visit. The parts behind a cold oven are covered at Oven Repair.

Meter days and the relight

The other common reason for a cold gas oven is meter work. Avista tests meters selected at random, tells those customers in advance, and turns service off temporarily during the test. Its representative checks and relights the appliances afterward, so ask for the oven to be included before the representative leaves. A meter replacement is scheduled in advance, and the instruction for that visit is clear: “Do not attempt to relight your natural gas equipment yourself.”

If an appliance was recently working and you are unsure why it stopped, Avista asks for a call. It may be able to relight the pilot if that is safe; if it cannot, it says to contact a third-party contractor. Once the representative has been and gone and the oven burner still stays dark, or lights and then goes out, the trouble is most likely in the oven itself.

Checks on an oven that lights electronically

GE Appliances' support page for a gas oven that will not come on lists checks an owner can make without opening anything:

01

The controls: Make sure the temperature and function knobs are set properly for Bake or Broil, and that knobs taken off for cleaning went back in their proper places.

02

The breaker. Check that the house breakers are on or the fuses are good. To reset an electronic control, turn the breaker off, wait one minute, and turn it back on, even if the clock or light still works.

03

The glow: On an oven with a glow-bar igniter, set it for Bake, open the door and look for a red glow at the back of the oven floor. No glow may mean a fault with the igniter, the oven controls, or other electrical parts, which is the repair visit.

04

The door latch and Sabbath mode: On a self-clean range with a mechanical latch, the latch should sit all the way in the unlocked position, and a model with a Sabbath feature should not be left in that mode.

A cold electric oven falls outside the gas questions entirely. Once a look at the panel shows its breaker has not tripped, it is a repair call from the start.

Rentals and a cold oven

Tenants should tell the landlord or property manager first. SD Appliance accepts work orders from property managers and individual landlords, and a work order that carries the tenant's details means the tenant is contacted directly to arrange access. Where a management account has a pre-authorization in place, work under the agreed limit proceeds without an approval call. Each job produces a receipt for the owner's records, and when there is no obvious physical damage, the owner is also informed of the cause. The rest of the rental process is at Property Management Appliance Repair.

On the phone, then at the oven

Say whether the oven is gas or electric, built-in or part of a range, and whether the house is newly occupied or has had meter work lately. For a gas oven, whether it lights slowly, lights and goes out, or stays dark narrows what gets looked at first, and so does whether you hear clicking or see a glow through the slots in the oven floor. If a representative has already been out, say what was relit.

At the oven, the question after a move or meter work is whether gas is reaching the igniter at all. If it stops short of the oven, that finding goes to the gas company or, if the fault is in the house piping, to a plumber or heating dealer. If gas arrives and the burner still will not light, the fault is in the oven's own ignition.

What an oven repair leaves out

01

Repairs only, in your home. Appliances are not installed, a new unit is not fitted into cabinetry, and nothing is reconnected after a kitchen change. The one exception anywhere on the site is a like-for-like garbage disposal swap.

02

Residential only. In Sergei's words, no commercial at all. Homes and rental properties are the business, and commercial kitchens, restaurants, and commercial refrigeration are not taken on.

03

There is no shop and no drop-off, so nothing gets carried anywhere. There is also no factory authorization here, which means manufacturer warranty repairs are not done. If your appliance is still under its manufacturer's warranty, you will be told to use that coverage rather than being sold a repair you could have had for free.
