Full cubes at breakfast and thin, hollow ones by a summer evening? In Coeur d'Alene, the city lists the season and the time of day among the factors that affect water pressure at a house, and, according to figures on the city's Water Department page in October 2026, a peak summer day drew about five times the winter demand.

Whirlpool lists small or hollow cubes as a sign of low water pressure. This page's own suggestion is to note when the small cubes appear: cubes that shrink only on summer evenings can point toward the supply rather than the valve or filter.

Clues in the timing

Cube size that changes with the hour

Each new batch usually drops onto the top of the bin, so the cubes on top are the newest. Look at them after a hot late afternoon and again first thing in the morning.

A door dispenser that slows at the same times

If the refrigerator has one, the dispenser shares the ice maker's supply line, and on many models its filter too. Time a glass in the morning and again at the hour the cubes shrink. Slow around the clock points first to the filter or to a kink in the line behind the refrigerator, both of which are known causes of reduced flow. Slow only at certain hours is more consistent with a supply change.

Other taps losing strength alongside it

At the hour the cubes come out thin, with nothing else in the house drawing water, run the cold kitchen tap and a tap on the highest floor. If the whole house feels weaker, the refrigerator is likely reflecting a change in the supply. If the other taps run strong and only the ice suffers, the refrigerator's own valve, filter or line moves up the list.

What the city says about pressure

The city's water FAQ says Coeur d'Alene draws its water from the Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer and lists factors that can affect pressure at a house: elevation, the season, the time of day, whether well pumps are running, and increased development in the area. It also says, “We are not able to ‘adjust’ pressures.”

The Water Department's page (October 2026) counted 11 wells in the city, put average winter demand at about 7 million gallons a day and a peak summer day at 35 to 38 million, and said two wells could meet winter demand while all of the wells ran on the hottest summer days. The evidence for an ice maker is in your own kitchen: whether the thin cubes keep to particular hours and months.

Whirlpool's refrigerator guidance makes the link from the appliance side: low water pressure “can cause water to be dispensed more slowly, result in small or hollow ice cubes, or lead to slow or no ice production.” An inlet valve that opens only partway gives the same small cubes (Ice Maker Repair). As this page's own rule of thumb, not a rule from either source, a worn valve or a clogged filter is more consistent with small cubes at any hour, in January as well as July, and a supply effect with cubes that come and go with the hours and the season.

When the pattern follows the clock or the calendar, have a qualified plumber test the home's water pressure during the hours when the cubes shrink, as Whirlpool advises. A reading below the minimum in the refrigerator's installation instructions points to the plumbing side, and a new valve would likely leave the summer cubes as they were.

What people ask next

Not by itself. The city lists elevation and increased development in an area as factors that affect pressure, so two houses need not receive the same supply. Each refrigerator also has its own valve, filter, and line, and those are the likelier suspects when only one kitchen has thin cubes. Comparing taps at the same hour helps: if both houses run weak then, the supply is the more likely common factor.

Probably not, if the timing lines up with the move. Kinks in the supply line are most likely after a move, and pushing the refrigerator too far back against the wall or cabinet can pinch it. Ease the refrigerator forward, look along the line for a sharp bend, and straighten it. A cracked line is a repair, and water line and connection repair behind the refrigerator is on the ice maker service list.

It can. A reverse-osmosis system can reduce water pressure further, and its storage tank should be allowed to refill after heavy use. A tank drawn down on a busy summer evening could add to a seasonal dip.

Usually not. Hollow or very small cubes are a water-volume symptom: the mold is filling partway and freezing what it gets. A colder setting does not put more water in the mold, so leave the freezer at the setting the manual gives.

Where the work stops

01

Repairs only, in your home. Appliances are not installed, a new unit is not fitted into cabinetry, and nothing is reconnected after a kitchen change. The one exception anywhere on the site is a like-for-like garbage disposal swap.

02

Residential only. In Sergei's words, no commercial at all. Homes and rental properties are the business, and commercial kitchens, restaurants, and commercial refrigeration are not taken on.

03

There is no shop and no drop-off, so nothing gets carried anywhere. There is also no factory authorization here, which means manufacturer warranty repairs are not done. If your appliance is still inside its manufacturer warranty, you will be told to use that coverage rather than being sold a repair you could have had free.
